What is kale spinach?
Kale spinach plant is a hybrid between kale and spinach and is exclusively grown by ZENXIN. Foods in these families have been shown to be helpful in protecting the central nervous system, reducing inflammation and delaying the aging process by protecting cells against damage.
What does it taste like?
Kale spinach has a strong and earthy taste and is a wholesome, hearty, leafy green like kale. It also has thin, hollow stems with long, flat, arrowhead-shaped leaves that have a slightly crunchy texture like choy sum.
Despite its earthy taste, kale spinach works delicious with lettuce in salad. Simply cut them in small ribbons and blend with lettuce in a salad with any desired sauces as topping.
Like any other leafy green vegetables, kale spinach can be used in many cooking methods, for instance, stir fry with garlic and chiles, steamed to accompany soup, blend into smoothies, pancake or shred and toss in a sauce, shredded chicken and cooked pasta. The hollow stems can also be cooked on their own as a crunchy side dish.
As kale spinach can be fairly fibrous and has a tougher texture to some, especially kids and elderly, suggest cutting the spinach into smaller pieces and cooking them longer to soften the texture.
Store kale spinach refrigerated in a plastic bag, dry container or wrap in paper towel to absorb moisture, and use within 2-3 days of purchase for optimum freshness.
Kale spinach is truly a nutrient powerhouse as it combines the health benefits of spinach and kale. It contains special protective carotenoid compounds that have been linked with decreasing the risk of many diseases, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative conditions and obesity. Kale spinach also supplies flavonoid, which is a type of powerful antioxidant that protects against disease by fighting free radical damage within the body. Aside from supplying high levels of antioxidants, kale spinach nutrition also offers an impressive number of vitamins and minerals overall. It is considered a nutrient-dense food, meaning there are very few calories in kale spinach, but it’s a good source of micronutrients like vitamin C, vitamin A, manganese, zinc and selenium.
