Green Packaging

Less Plastic, Same Organic Freshness

Organic fresh produce requires maximum effort, takes valuable time to grow, harvest and to deliver farm freshness to your doorstep. At this point, packaging is a necessary evil that ensures that all the valuable organic harvests are at their optimum freshness before travelling to get to the consumers. It also functions as a barrier that avoids cross-contamination. We always try our best in balancing the environmental impact of the packaging against the impact of food waste that would occur without the use of packaging.

Generally, the type of packaging that we use the most for our fresh produce is plastic, since it could be transported in and out of the fridge without turning soggy. While we realize that eliminating plastic at all cost is virtually impossible, we resort to more sustainable options.  It took us some time to come to these, packaging that are more sustainable without compromising the quality of our fresh produce so that our farmers’ efforts are not wasted:

Compostable Cellulose Net

Certified with ‘OK compost’ conformity mark by TUV Austria, this cellulose net is 100% compostable under home or industrial composting environment. In another words, the net is able to disintegrate completely into carbon dioxide, water and biomass, that can be turned into valuable compost in 6 month-time under industrial composting environment. While under home compost condition, eg. buried in the backyard, more than 90% can be degraded within 12 months. The cost of this cellulose net is 6 times higher than the usual plastic net, but to us, it definitely worth the value since we are able to eliminate 95% of plastic.

PLA-Laminated Paper Tray

Not only that it is compostable, Polylactic acid (PLA) plastic is derived from renewable resource– biomass such as corn, sugar cane, cassava etc, making it a more sustainable alternative than the traditional petroleum-based plastic. Another good thing about PLA is there is NO toxic fume emission when incinerated. By switching our previous PET and Oxium plastic tray into this PLA-laminated paper tray, we are able to achieve 70-80% reduction in plastic usage.

Biodegradable Tape

Made from biodegradable film and adhesive, this tape is biodegradable, recyclable and non-toxic to the environment. Compared to our previous packaging using PVC film, this can reduce 65% of non-degradable plastic that could end up in landfill or ocean.

Coming soon-Natural Branding

Stay tuned for the new look of our organic Avocados! Natural Branding, a contact-free method that has been approved by EU Organic certifier SKAL. The method is completely safe and no additional substances are used. What happens, is that a high definition laser removes part of the pigment from the outer layer of the peel of the fruit or vegetable, leaving a clearly visible mark. It has NO effect on taste, quality or shelf life. And the greatest news of all: 95% of plastic can be reduced!

Our efforts don’t stop here, as we are still exploring for other sustainable packaging options, especially for our leafy vegetables, which are the most fragile and susceptible to moisture loss. We know that we are far from perfect, but we are certainly on our way in making our planet healthier, slowly but surely.
