Sustainability

“Sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

As defined by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development

“Sustainability is the capacity to improve the quality of human life while living within the carrying capacity of the Earth’s supporting eco-systems.”

As defined by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),
the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it

“Sustainability is about stabilizing the currently disruptive relationship between earth’s two most complex systems—human culture and the living world.”

As defined by environmentalist Paul Hawken,
who has written about how we are using and destroying the earth’s resources faster then they can be regenerated and replenished

Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universally adopted framework from the United Nations (UN) since 2015 for sustainable development, providing the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice. The Goals interconnect and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve each Goal and target by 2030.

SDGs Campaign

Organic Agriculture is Part of the Solution for SDGs

At ZENXIN, we strongly believe that by supporting organic farming, we are also supporting United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) attributed to the positive and unharmful effects of organic farming. The SDGs Campaign, spearheaded by Dutch organic specialist Eosta counts many organisations from all around the world as its members, including:

  • International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM)
  • Organic Sweden
  • Pro Luomu (Finland)
  • Soil Association (UK)
  • Organic Denmark
  • Bio Austria
  • Bioforum Vlaanderen and Wallonie
  • Irish Organic Board
  • Bionext (Netherlands)
  • Assobio (Italy)
  • Ecovia (Spain)
  • Oikos (Norway)

Numerous organisations in USA, Canada and Japan also support this campaign. All have come together with the common goal of sharing how organic can be part of the solution for a more sustainable future across the global organic sector.

In September 2019, ZENXIN was formally invited to be part of this campaign.

Organic Agriculture and SDGs

‘Shift to organic agriculture vital for sustainable food systems.’

Finds study conducted by students at the Netherlands-based University of Twente

A new, independent study conducted by students at the Netherlands-based University of Twente, found that adopting organic agriculture is crucial to meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report, Organic Agriculture and the Sustainable Development Goals, is launched on 25 September 2019 to mark the official anniversary of UN SDGs.

The study concluded that switching to organic agriculture can achieve eight of the 17 SDGs, for example:

  • Taking urgent action against climate change
  • Protecting biodiversity
  • Addressing hunger
  • Ensuring clean water for all
